Access without support is not opportunity.
“Access without support is not opportunity.”
— Cathy Engstrom and Vincent Tinto
Originally coined by renowned education researchers Cathy Engstrom and Vincent Tinto, this quote has become a guiding mantra for higher education leaders, advocates, and nonprofits nationwide.
For decades, the standard push for educational equity focused strictly on “access” — getting low-income, minority, or first-generation students through the college gates. But getting accepted is only half the battle. Without financial stability, mentorship, and targeted academic resources, the open door of higher education quickly becomes a revolving door.
At CSPcv, we live by this quote. We believe that true opportunity doesn’t end with an admission letter; it begins with the sustained, holistic support that empowers a student to cross the graduation stage.
Dennis Reed
After a successful 30-year career in print and advertising sales, Dennis Reed relocated to the Coachella Valley in 2015. Driven to give back, he volunteered with local organizations before completing mentor training with the SMART HS program in 2017, where mentoring four-year college-bound students quickly became his primary passion.
In 2023, Dennis expanded his efforts to address the obstacles facing recently graduated, first-generation, and low-income (FGLI) scholars. Today, as Program Director of College Support Program CV, Dennis provides the holistic support, tutoring, and coaching scholars need to thrive and earn their degrees.
Bridging the gap from admission to graduation.
Getting accepted into a four-year college is a monumental achievement—but for first-generation and low-income students, it is only the beginning of the journey. Our story began in 2017 through high school mentorship in PSUSD’s SMART program. Yet, year after year, bright local scholars reached campus only to be overwhelmed by steep academic transitions, complex bureaucracy, and financial anxieties.
In 2023, we took decisive action to close this gap by expanding our mission directly to recent high school graduates entering college. We launched our BETA cohort in 2023, followed by our PILOT cohort in 2025. Building on that momentum, this summer we officially established College Support Program CV as an independent non-profit corporation (501(c)(3) tax-exempt status pending*)—shifting our sole focus to the university years and delivering a personalized, two-year safety net that walks alongside scholars from the summer before their freshman year through the end of their sophomore year.
* College Support Program CV is a California nonprofit corporation, and our application for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status is on file with the IRS. Exemption applies retroactively to our date of incorporation, so contributions made now are expected to be fully tax-deductible as of the date you give. We have no reason to expect anything other than approval, and we will send every donor a copy of our IRS determination letter as soon as it arrives.
